about admission essay
Writing your college admission essay will require some planning because you will want your admissions essay to stand out among other applicants.Your college admission essay is a narrative writing piece in which you tell a story about you. This is not a full biography. This is an assignment in which you grab a hold of a significant experience or recall a person who had an important influence on you in a pretty specific way.
The United States has become dependent on standardized tests to assess students, yet writing is still an effective way for colleges and universities to determine your ability to write at the college level, clearly and substantively. They also look at the writing sample as a means of revealing your potential contributions to college life while you will be at their institution of higher learning.
Your Topic -
Write on a topic that you care about. The admissions committee wants to see your perspective on your experience and how you see things that are important at that stage of your life. Is there something you are passionate about that you already have experience with? Reveal yourself and what you see as valuable experience. Avoid being too broad in your topic.
Although you want your essay to represent “you” there are still some areas of personal experience that you should stay away from:
-essays that read like lists
-restatements of you extracurricular activities that are already on your application
-editorial reporting on politics or other current events.
Here are some tips or reminders that you should be aware of in writing a good admissions essay:
1) Write around a main idea or point you are making in each essay.
2) Develop the main idea with well-reasoned, supportive details
3) Make sure your ideas flow and that your writing style is college level.
4) A well-developed essay is important and so is the accuracy of spelling, grammar, and the smoothness of sentence construction.
5) Be direct and focused and stick to the word limit if there is one.
Show - don’t tell. That basic writing tip is one of your college admission essay tips as well. Show your qualities through your topic selection, tone, and writing style. Don’t tell the admissionsABo committee your characteristics. Show them by letting those qualities shine through the essay you are writing on a topic you can be passionate about.
Approach your writing and editing from the perspective of what you can add to the actual application. Here is your chance to write an essay that will illuminate your application, transcripts, and references and convince the admissions committee that you and their institution are a good match.
